How much you can claim
Per passenger, for arriving 3 hours or more late, late cancellations and denied boarding. The amount depends on the flight distance.
| Flight distance | EU261 | UK261 |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | €250 | £220 |
| 1,500 to 3,500 km | €400 | £350 |
| Over 3,500 km | €600 | £520 |
Long-haul flights arriving 3 to 4 hours late, and some rerouted flights, may be reduced by 50%.
When British Airways has to pay
British Airways must pay compensation under EU261 or UK261 for disrupted flights departing from Europe or the UK, and for flights arriving there from elsewhere, because British Airways is a UK airline.
- Delay: you reached your final destination 3 hours or more after the scheduled arrival time.
- Cancellation: you were told less than 14 days before departure, and the replacement did not get you there close to the original time.
- Denied boarding: the flight was overbooked and you did not give up your seat voluntarily.
When the airline does not have to pay
Airlines are excused when the disruption was caused by extraordinary circumstances outside their control, such as severe weather, air traffic control restrictions or a security alert. Technical faults, crew shortages and strikes by the airline's own staff usually do not count. Airlines sometimes cite extraordinary circumstances without evidence, so your letter asks them to prove it for your specific flight.
Why send the claim yourself
Claim companies take care of the whole process and typically keep 25% to 50% of your compensation for it. Most airlines have a free online claim form and pay valid claims directly to passengers. The hard part is knowing what to write and which rules to cite. That is what your letter does.
